Project Description

The U.S. Department of State, Office of International Religious (J/IRF) announces an open competition for organizations interested in submitting applications for projects that support freedom of religion or belief through the protection of religious and cultural heritage sites in Sri Lanka. This program cannot fund the construction, repair, or maintenance of religious properties, artifacts, or cultural heritage sites.

Cultural heritage is often important to members of a society for various reasons. In Sri Lanka, recent instances of archeological-religious disputes involving heritage sites have hindered opportunities for collaboration to preserve this shared cultural heritage and foster collaboration and mutual respect across religious communities. There is concern that these disputes drive ethnoreligious tensions and delay post-war reconciliation. Focusing on historical cultural traditions and leveraging a shared commitment to preserving such spaces can increase mutual respect in these communities.
